The science of nutrition is concerned with the ways in which food interacts with the body. Food will provide the body with fuel, giving it the sources of energy required for all activities. It provides materials for the building and maintenance of body tissues, and it supplies vital substances necessary for the regulation of all bodily processes. Placing greater demand on the body through sport requires closer attention to diet and the need for the correct nutrients, in appropriate amounts, at the right time, plays a vital part in achieving success both in training and competition.
Individual athletes – whether you are a professional, amateur or recreational athlete, I will work with you, and where appropriate your coach, to assess your dietary needs for training and competition. I will help plan your diet to compliment your periods of training, ensuring a balanced and appetising plan that suits your needs, and ensure appropriate options to support you through competition such as refuelling strategies for endurance events, or recovery tactics for events/heats spread over one or more days.
Weight control – some sports require the athlete to compete in specified weight categories. The right intake of nutrients at the right time is critical to ensure that the athlete is able to sustain the rigors of training, but able to meet the weight criterion on competition day. Planning the diet is vital to ensure that, as competition day approaches and the training schedule moves from quantity to quality and rest, the athlete maintains power and strength but does not gain weight.
Special diets – I have extensive experience planning diets for people following a vegetarian/vegan diet, and those with allergies or intolerances.
Team nutrition – when it comes to winning, the right nutrition can give the whole team an advantage. Whether all team members perform the same function such as rowing, or playing different positions, placing different demands on the individual members such as rugby, I can help plan dietary intake for each member of the team.
